Open Storage

Storage in today’s IT industry consists largely of closed, proprietary, and expensive  systems. Enterprise disk arrays are generally closed systems with components  available only from a single vendor. Customers cannot select the best disks, software, or controller hardware from the open market to use within their systems — they are locked into buying the vendor’s limited and expensive components. Even as storage vendors start to utilise commodity-priced components such as disk drives, software, processors, and servers within the design of their enterprise storage systems, they still choose to limit customer choice and to charge premium prices for the entire system — even for minor upgrades.
